Kristo Buase Monastery

Kristo Buase Monastery

In 1989, the English Province made a foundation in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Techiman, Ghana, West Africa, where now there is a flourishing community of monks, made into an autonomous priory in August 2016. On 15th August 2016, the monks elected Father Bede Kierney of Pluscarden to be their first Conventual Prior.

In 1987, the Bishop of Sunyani, in Ghana, asked for English monks to found a monastery in his diocese. As none of our Abbeys could help him individually, it was decided to make it the work of the whole Province of the Subiaco Congregation in Great Britain. The foundation was made jointly by Prinknash Abbey, Pluscarden Abbey, and St. Augustine’s Abbey in 1989.

A beautiful site has been developed, designed by a famous architect, with three springs of water and spacious lands for building and planting. The Kristo Buase Monastery (Christ in the Rocks) has been assisted by members of the Prinknash, Ramsgate (now Chilworth) and Pluscarden communities, but on 6th August 2016 it became an autonomous priory
